Magna and the Contract-Manufacturing Model for Autonomous Vehicles

Magna's autonomy exposure runs through a less obvious channel: building vehicles — including AV-platform vehicles — for other companies' brands.

Somebody has to actually build the car, even when the badge on the hood belongs to a company that does not run its own assembly lines. Magna International is frequently that somebody.

As one of the larger contract manufacturers and parts suppliers in the industry, Magna has produced vehicles on behalf of other automakers for years, including electric and specialty platforms those automakers either could not or chose not to build in-house. That role puts Magna in an unusual position relative to autonomy. It is not developing a self-driving stack, and it does not operate a fleet. Its exposure to the AV transition runs through volume: whatever autonomy-related hardware or vehicle platforms other companies design, Magna may end up being the one that physically manufactures them.

This matters for how an index of AV-industry companies should be constructed. A pure count of companies with self-driving software would miss a manufacturer whose business model sits orthogonal to that software layer entirely but whose revenue still rises and falls with how much autonomy-related hardware actually gets built. Contract manufacturing is, in a sense, agnostic about which specific platform wins. Magna profits from the manufacturing regardless of whose name ends up on the vehicle.

There is an obvious tension in that model too. A contract manufacturer's fortunes are tied to decisions made by its customers, not by itself; if a given automaker cancels a platform or brings production in-house, Magna's exposure to that specific programme disappears regardless of how well it executed. That is the tradeoff for being spread across many programmes rather than committed to one. Diversification cuts risk and control at the same time, and it is not obvious the tradeoff favors the supplier over the long run.

Magna's contract-manufacturing track record already includes a wide range of automakers' badges rather than one. Its Magna Steyr plant in Austria has built vehicles for brands including BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar over the years, alongside Magna's own parts and systems businesses supplying still other manufacturers. That breadth is the point: whichever automaker eventually commits to a driverless-capable production platform at real volume, there is a reasonable chance Magna, or a plant like it, ends up building at least some of that hardware, regardless of who wins the underlying software race.

Building a vehicle designed for higher levels of automation is not the same manufacturing task as building a conventional one, even before any software is loaded. Redundant power and steering systems, additional wiring harnesses for sensor arrays, and space allocated for onboard compute hardware all have to be engineered into the vehicle at the assembly stage, not bolted on afterward. A contract manufacturer that can absorb that added complexity without slowing its production lines has a real, if unglamorous, advantage over one that cannot, a capability that shows up nowhere in a simple count of which companies are working on autonomy software.

Magna's exposure is not limited to contract manufacturing, either. The company's other divisions supply mirrors, seating, powertrain components and, increasingly, driver-assistance electronics of their own, cameras and radar units among them, putting Magna in the same component-supplier category as Continental or Denso on top of its assembly-line business. That dual role, building the finished vehicle in some programmes and supplying pieces of the ADAS stack in others, is unusual even within this index, and it makes Magna's total AV exposure harder to isolate from its non-automotive-specific manufacturing revenue than a single-purpose supplier's would be.

Magna's index profile is built on that logic. It is a less visible way to hold AV exposure than owning a robotaxi brand, and it is also, by construction, a less concentrated one.
